T is for Taffeta

For the month of April I will be taking part in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I will be using two tools besides my trusty computer - my imagination and my dictionary -The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition.. I will turn to the letter of the day, flip the pages and let my fickle finger of fate find the word. Then I'll write - might be a story, might be a rant, might be a poem. Who knows! Do let me know what you think. To go to the list of other participants go here - There's a heck of a lot of blogs and there are many more signed up below me. If you make a comment I will do my darnedest to check out your blog and comment. Spread the love around!

Taffeta - n. A crisp, smooth fabric with a slight sheen, made of various fibers and used esp. for women's garments.

April 22, 1943 - Dear Diary - Tonight I'm going to the Roseland for another dance. Will he be there? It is always such a scrum - how will I find him? Maybe he's shipped out already. I'll just die if he's gone already and we haven't really ... well you know diary - made any firm plans for the future. I'll wear my new dress - mother's cousin sent it from the States - it is Taffeta and a glorious shade of burgundy. I love how it shimmers and shines.
Those boys - they are full of themselves - how they preen and act grand. As so they should, be willing to give their bodies and souls for the Dominion. But Diary, that is why I like him. He is different than the rest. He is quiet and humble. He says that he is glad of the war for one thing only and that is that it sprung him out of his little prairie town in Manitoba and now he has gotten to see the great blue sea and the fine port of Halifax which everyone agrees is the bee's knees for good times.
Oh Diary - please let my darling new dress do its job and hold his attention. And then don't let him get hurt in this big terrible war. It's a lot to ask, I know, but Diary do not fail me now!

Jan - You've done such a wonderful job of conveying time and place here! I can just feel that mix of too of anxiety and thrill of putting on that dress, with all of the hope that goes with it. Lovely!

Love this. So good for the time period and yet it's timeless. How many girls the world over have penned the same words. I hope she found him.

Beautiful story! Ahhh a time when Taffeta didn't make your brides maids cringe!
