For the month of April I will be taking part in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I will be using two tools besides my trusty computer - my imagination and my dictionary -The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition.. I will turn to the letter of the day, flip the pages and let my fickle finger of fate find the word. Then I'll write - might be a story, might be a rant, might be a poem. Who knows! Do let me know what you think. To go to the list of other participants go here *** I'm number 1414 - that's a heck of a lot of blogs and there are many more signed up below me. If you make a comment I will do my darnedest to check out your blog and comment. Spread the love around!
Epigram - n. 1. A short poem expressing a single thought or observation with terseness and wit. 2. A concise, clever, and often paradoxical statement.
Oh to be able to fire off these condensed poems of wit and power! To slip into a speech "I have a dream" (Martin Luther King) or "Give me liberty or give me death."(Patrick Henry) or one of my favourites "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." (Eleanor Roosevelt). "Imagine ... " John Lennon, is an example of a one-word epigram.
I will give you the one I use when working with clients in my work as a psychotherapist. As far as I know I invented it but of course that doesn't mean it wasn't already invented. Epigrams are like that. This is what I tell folks who are struggling. "It takes a lot of grit and irritation to make a pearl!"

Jan - I wish I had those golden words too sometimes. They really are amazing. And I love that one about the pearl - inspirational!!
Loved the epigrams, especially yours: "It takes a lot of grit and irritation to make a pearl!" I'm going to have to write that down and post it on my refrigerator.

I love your epigram. I might have to tape it up by my desk.
I reckon a fella has to eat a lot of gravel to make all that grit, eh? Loved the epigram! Best regards to you. Ruby
