Snow Day

path?

up to his withers in heaven...

This week was to be wild with responsibility - more clients than I've seen in awhile, lots of finishing up the endless govt. project, little time for pleasures such as posting, knitting, writing on my wip etc...but today! Today the world has been whited out - I can barely see the chicken coop from the back door. Hoagy longs for the wild romps of his youth through the freshly fallen and falling snow. The man tells me that I must cancel my busy day - that there will be a different day. I email the folks I meant to see and tell them - alas, alack - it will be a different day. This is going to be a finish reading one novel and pick up another day. A eat a big breakfast of eggs and tortillas day. A figure out the stalls and stumbles in my wip sort of day. A knit on my project day. A watch an episode or three of West Wing day. Trick Ron into playing scrabble with me day. A sit on my bum and meditate awhile day. A get out in the snowy snow with dog and camera day...
ah...
a snow day that feels just like it did when my mom would wake us up late and say - no school today kids! And we would shout with glee-
A SNOW DAY!

Ah, that sounds lovely! We don't really have snow days in Norway. It would mean staying at home 1/4 of the year. I imagined Canada to be about the same, but I guess it depends on WHERE in Canda one is.

I am now officially longing for spring. Chances are I won't see it for at least another month or two. (Actually, I'm only inofficially longing for spring. It's not politically correct in this country to want spring earlier than March. Which is how it should be. I suppose.)

Hi Cru - thanks for dropping by. Re- snow days - you mean the schools NEVER cancel? Our kids in this part of the world get about four to nine snow days a year on average (I totally made that up but I think it is true enough). If the roads are unplowed then the busses simply can't get the kids there or not safely anyway. We get less snow on the whole than central Canada (Ontario & Quebec) but the roads are often worse because of the shifting temperatures which create black ice. Even some of the banks were closed this morning! I live out of town and am an extremely wimpy driver so all my clients are forewarned! People in town probably got to work - most of them anyway but ALL the schools were closed including universities so...
I was just out shovelling - it is very light but it comes up almost to my hips and I'm tall. Our nice neighbor has a atv plow so came over and did a lot of the main part.
One of my clients has an suv so is coming out here to see me in my home. The rest I managed to put into the rest of the week so things are still good.
later my deario,
Jan

I love the forced rest that nature provides from time to time! I grew up in California's Sierra Nevada mountain foothills and looked forward to snow days because it meant that we had a nice piling of snow. I well remember that soaked feet feeling from staying out in the snow too long, the slow thaw once indoors, and curling up with books and hot cocoa by the fire. I hope your day is restful and productive in its own way.

I can't remember that my school ever closed due to snow. Once it closed because the river flooded the basement. Once it closed because the local soccer team dropped a division. But I don't think it ever closed for snow. I remember a girl in my class once stayed home from school because it was -25 degrees (celcius). We all thought she was a bit of a chicken...

There have been occasions when the school buses were delayed, but usually the plowing is a pretty efficient business. We can have traffic issues and delays, but closing schools? Not likely.

It should be mentioned that I have absolutely no idea if this is also the case in Northern Norway. If you have to travel by boat for hours to get to school, (which isn't unheard of,) I imagine they'll get "snow days". Or "cold days". But then again, they are used to it...

Hi Faith and hello again Cruella! Added some snow pics. I love nature when it goes extreme don't you? We haven't had our road ploughed out yet! Very long time to wait (it is three pm). I had a doughty client make the trek in his SUV to have his appointment here! And I've got beans cooking in the slow cooker, Ron has bread rising and the dog has obviously had his snow romp. Now back to my novel.

Oh, Jan, what a heavenly day! and I'm in love with your dog! He looks so nice! In Michigan they 'budget' for 3 snow days--meaning they assume we'll get that many. We we don't, then the kids get out early, and I think over 5 and they have to go extra at the end to make up for it.

Wonderful photos! Our snow Saturday morning looked like that - just clinging to the trees.

Stacy - thanks re the photos - spring around the corner you say! Ha! says I. Yesterday on a Gwen day, I went for a walk and mentioned ever so slightly that I thought we'd gotten off pretty good this year. KAPOW!
Tartlett - oh Hoagy is nice. He's a rebel child and runs away if he gets a chance but other than that rather understandable and shared behaviour - he is a doll. He'll be nine in two months - imagine! I love the idea of budgeting for snow days - people trying to regulate the weather!!!
Jemi - I did, I thoroughly did. Every bit of it.
Diane - yes, the snow was clinging to everything. When we awoke I saw it on the upstairs windows and knew that a snow day was a big possibility.
