My theme this year is the ABCEDARIA of Women who have inspired me.
K is for Frida Kahlo - oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!
This fabulous, fabulous woman! I know I won't be introducing anyone to her - she is a cult figure - and yet I hope she is known for more than her becoming unibrow or her wild and tempestuous marriage to Diego Rivera. She inspires me because she worked tirelessly on her art - even when her poor broken body was fighting her and because she was absolutely true to her own beliefs. I love her art, her wildness, her desire to have the aboriginal people of Mexico recognized - all of it.
Go check out her art work if you haven't. See the movie about her - called Frida, read the wondrous book by Barbara Kingsolver (another fabulous K) Lacuna which involves her life in a fictional novel. And while you are at it - read anything by Kingsolver - who can make writing about social action painless and riveting. Both are heroes to me.
Any women out there who knock your socks off? do share...
I'm so glad you chose Kahlo, Jan! Her art has always impressed me, and in life, what a strong person! You can't not be inspired by her!
ReplyDeleteI saw Frida - the film - but neglected to check out her work. Very remiss and I'm going to fix that!

Her art is quite something. The women who inspire me are those who had gone after what they wanted without apology - like Madonna ;-) Good luck with the rest of the AtoZchallenge.
ReplyDeleteFrida - flippin fabulous un every way. Kingsolver is one of my faves .. The Poisonwood Bible is a masterpiece.
